They Write by Night, Episode 6

Noir Cool

Noir Cool meets pre-Noir Cool, so pre– it’s Elizabethan. Philip Marlowe meets Hamlet. Lummis’ men. And nothing stood between her and her two great loves — except for the fact that they never existed. Robert Mitchum enters, stage left — and what a story. What a life. His life alone might make for a better story than gets told in the quintessential film noir, Out of the Past — or as good, at least. David Lehman’s “Daily” poem imagines Mitchum on the streets of New York and celebrates his Noir Cool.
