TCM Classic Film Festival

Here’s a preview of the Ninth annual TCM Classic Film Festival.

Screenings take place from Thursday April 26 to Sunday April 29, 2018 at historical Hollywood movie theaters like the Chinese, opened May 18, 1927 with a premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s The King of Kings, and the Egyptian, opened October 18, 1922 with the silent Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks.

The Producers-croppedThe opening night film is The Producers (1968) by Mel Brooks on its 50th anniversary.
Director Martin Scorsese will receive the Robert Osborne Award in recognition of his work as a film preservationist, presented by Leonardo DiCaprio, who acted in his movies: Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).

Actress Cicely Tyson will be honored April 27 with a Hand and Footprint Ceremony at the Chinese Theater IMAX.

A tribute to director Robert Benton with screenings of Kramer vs Kramer (1979) with Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, and Places in the Heart (1984) with Sally Field.

A tribute to Australian director Gillian Armstrong with screening of My Brilliant Career (1979) with Judy Davis and Sam Neill.

This year’s theme “Powerful Words: The Page Onscreen” is exemplified by movies like To Have and Have Not (1944) with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, directed by Howard Hawks, written by William Faulkner from the novel by Ernest Hemingway, Woman of the Year (1942) with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey, directed by George Stevens.

One of the sections is “Power of the Press” with His Girl Friday (1940) directed by Howard Hawks, starring Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant, and Park Row (1952) directed by Samuel Fuller, presented by John Sayles.

In the section “Discoveries” we find Maurice (1987) directed by James Ivory from the novel by E. M. Forster.
