The Roots and Wings Project and Founder/Artistic Director Jesse Bliss unite forces with long-time collaborator playwright Patricia Zamorano to bring an evening of theatre that represents the demand for justice. MATRIACH embodies an unorthodox exploration of the roles women play in a patriarchal society and the urgent need to transform the current dynamic.
In a time where patriarchy continues to oppress matriarchal roles through all color lines, this powerful work speaks to the urgent need for women in our society to be honored and respected. Some of Los Angeles’ most prominent writers and performers unite to bring you a night that will empower, provoke and uplift your spirit.
MATRIACH was initially performed as a reading as part of the Writ Large Press 90X90 Event at Traxx at Union Station to a crowded house. Both actors and audience were deeply moved by the work. There was a write-up by Oscar Basulto in Playwriting in the City speaking to the collective conclusion the piece needs a full run. Thus was born this 2-night show with an all-star line up of theatre legends and literary giants including Jesse Bliss, Sigrid Gilmer, Kristina Leach, Roger Mason, Ramona Pilar, Tamika Simpkins, Diane Rodriguez, and Patricia Zamorano.

Jesse Bliss (Playwright, Producer, Actress) is an international playwright, director, producer, actress, poet and veteran arts educator. Her work has been widely produced at world-class venues including the United Nations, Edinburgh, S.P.A.R.C. at the Old Jail in Venice, Lincoln Heights Jail, Last Bookstore, The Rosenthal Theater at Inner-City Arts and countless others. She is Founder and Director of The Roots and Wings Project and producer of KPFK 90.7 FM’s THINK OUTSIDE THE CAGE.
Patricia Zamorano (Playwright Producer) was born and raised in Boyle Heights has worked with Casa 0101 since 2007. She has written two full length plays- YOU DON’T KNOW ME & LOCKED UP as well as several short plays for both CHICANAS, CHOLAS y CHISME and BROWN AND OUT and is an award recipient from the City of Boyle Heights for her artistic contributions.
