Liberating strangeness

Strangeness is not something we usually go about making, although as the feature image shows, someone must have found the combination of a TV put out on the street and a tree stump putting out new shoots simply irresistible.

And just as irresistible was taking a photo of the strange combination although, metaphorically, one can easily see the message here: just as the tree stump put out new shoots maybe the TV will find new owner and continued use.

Strangeness does not signify meaninglessness but only an invitation to find meaning, by liberating oneself from standard perceptual schemes.

Maurice Amiel, M. Arch. (U.C. Berkeley) is retired professor of Environmental Design at the School of Design, University of Quebec at Montreal, where he was involved mainly in environment-behaviour teaching and applied research projects. In order to promote environmental awareness, he has turned after retiring to documenting and writing about various physical and human agents contributing to a sense of self, place and sociability.
