Secrets of My Sex, published by Bombshelter Press, is the first collection of work by Los Angeles writer Bella Mahaya Carter. In four sections: Girl, Woman, Wife, Mother. Bella Mahaya Carter’s poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction have appeared in The Sun, ONTHEBUS, Calyx, Pearl, Literary Mama, and elsewhere. Born and raised in Long Island, New York, she studied dance at The Juilliard School and graduated from Scripps College with a BA in Dance and Literature. She holds an MFA in Film Production with a Screenwriting emphasis from the University of Southern California, and an MA in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica. She lives in Studio City, California with her husband, Jim, and their daughter, Helen.

“This collection sparks with poems that are bright and fierce—comets cutting through the mundane.”
– Bhargavi C. Mandava, Where the Oceans Meet

“Bella Mahaya Carter’s insightful journey into womanhood made me blush, laugh, cry and cackle like a joyful witch. In the end, this authentic and daring collection left me feeling grateful I was born female. It should be mandatory reading not just for our sisters and daughters, but more importantly, for our husbands and our sons.” Maureen Muldoon (writer/director), Booby Trap

Habibi My pick for graphic novel of 2011. Sweeping landscapes, a world that is ours and not ours, a love story, the challenge of cultural and religious conflict — all tied together in an inventive visual style that’s a most enjoyable experience. (AL)

Kindred: 25th Anniversary Edition “An example to the expansiveness of the human imagination. It defies easy categorization: science fiction, history, slave narrative, or all of the above? And it is one of the first (and still one of the few) science fiction books that was written by an African American woman. It opened a new genre for black women to engage, re-imagine and create.” (UKR)

This month we recommend:

Beach House – Beach House Chillest of the chill, great dreaming & writing music. (AL)
Submarine – Scanners Luxurious, driving British indie rock with addictive songs & great vocals by Sarah Daly. (AL)
La Diva Aux Pieds Nus – Césaria Évora Her debut album, recorded in 1988, brought the “barefoot diva” instant worldwide acclaim. (AL)

EQUIPMENT & TECHNOLOGY

I asked my photographer friends, “What’s the best DSLR camera under $1000?” They all said this one. And it’s about $200 less than $1000. The technology keeps getting better & better. (AL)

The tablet standard, well-priced.

Excellent tablet, plays Flash and Android-powered. I think it exceeds the iPad in many areas. (AL)

B&H has the biggest selection and the best prices. I remember the first time I went to their store in New York, on West 17th St. – I wandered for hours with my eyes popping out of my head. They’ve since moved to a much larger location, and have become the largest non-chain photo and video equipment store in the US. Use the B&H search box above to browse their entire selection of computers, cameras, audio and other gear, and support Cultural Weekly at the same time! (AL)

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Jack Grapes teaches people how to write. His Method Writing approach develops all writing skills. For me, it was a life-changing experience and showed me how to forget writing as my school-teachers taught me to write, and to start writing in my own voice & style. Highly recommended. (AL)

Jane Atkinson is a friend who has been instrumental in helping me share my knowledge with others. I recommend her book The Wealthy Speaker, as well as her training materials and personal coaching. (AL)
