L.A.’s Grand Central Market: Gentrification Isn’t Always A Bad Thing…

Two years ago when I moved a few blocks away from Grand Central Market, it was a ghost town of empty stalls, mostly abandoned restaurants, a few grocers, produce over-ripe and priced to move. Then things began to change. The 98 year old landmark got a facelift and our community regained a treasured resource. Surviving restaurants were joined by sleek-countered delis, ethnic eateries, oyster and breakfast bars, barbecue, and some of the best organic meat and produce, spice bazaars and coffee bars downtown Los Angeles has ever known, all while keeping its zocalo feel. And the people-watching is fantastic! With the picturesque Angel’s Flight just across the street, Grand Central Market is one of the best old parts of the “New Downtown.”
