Japanese Art that Inspired Robots
Karakuri, a practice that dates to 17th century Japan, is the art of creating automata. Inspired by the watchmakers of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Karakuri, in its turn, inspired 20th century robot inventors (as well as part of the manga aesthetic). In this video, one of the few remaining Karakuri artists keeps the tradition alive.
